Height: 5-7 Okay, Dan Smith, what do you do for an encore? In his first season on the FIS Grundig Snowboard World Cup, Smith made a quick impression. He had a pair of podium visits during the first month of the season and earned a spot at the World Championships. But, saving his best for last, Smith sparkled in the final month of the season winning a pair of halfpipe contests, including one at what's expected to be the 1998 Olympic venue in Japan. Preseason training for this winter was delayed as he recuperated from shoulder surgery after last season. "He's super talented," said Coach Peter Foley, "and although he didn't get to train as much as the rest of the team, I think he'll be strong again. He's motivated and he's got some impressive tricks."
Comment: "I like jumping and being in the air. I have a small build, so racing isn't really good for me because I'm not heavy enough to go fast. I'd rather be doing flips and stuff, anyway." Start-up: As a teenager growing up in Colorado, he discovered snowboarding early and began competing shortly after he started. He raced and competed in the'pipe but quickly decided he was stronger in freestyle. His first contest, when he was about 15, was at Ski Sunlight, down-valley from Aspen, and it motivated him to keep training and trying to get better. Palspower: "I had a lot of big-name heroes but never had any direct contact with them. So, my friends pushed me" to succeed. Summer fun: In previous years, Smith has worked in an Aspen butcher shop. But, with rehab on his mind, he spent this past summer training and getting his shoulder back in order. His daily schedule involved lifting weights, running and hiking. And...?: In his few spare moments, Smith tries to simply hang-out and enjoy the Colorado outdoors. "I fish, tie flies and build things like jewelry boxes and tables out of native wood from my area.
