Height: 5-5 Flyweight freestyler Tommy Czeschin, the youngest rider on the U.S. squad, is home-schooled. With the World Cup tour as a wintertime "classroom,' his best subject probably will be geography, and he's got one place he understandably wants to see again - Nagano, Japan. Czeschin hopes to return to Nagano, riding there when snowboarding makes its Olympic debut next season. But, first things first. That means Czeschin (sheh-SHEEN) has to keep moving up the international ladder. He joined the World Cup when the '95 tour came to North America; last season, he had top-5s at two Olympic sites - in Calgary ('88) and Nagano's Kanbayashi venue for '98.
Comment: "I'm looking forward to World Cups this year. My goal is to do better and eventually earn a spot on the Olympic team.' Start-up: He was mostly a recreational alpine skier until the winter of 1990-91 when he and some pals tried riding. He raced occasionally but, as a self-taught rider, he felt the 'pipe was more to his talents. Coachsez: "Tommy's young but really talented. He's the best gymnast on the team, which helps him pull off some of his tricks.' - Peter Foley Summer fun: Dirt bikes, skateboards, trampoline, soccer and driving his remote control car No place like...: Given his choice, Czeschin enjoys Mammoth Mountain more than anywhere. "It's the best mountain I've been to.'
