Height: 5-3 Halfpipe newcomer Griselda Gonzalez is delaying med school while she takes a run at the World Cup, the World Championships and the Olympics. Gonzalez made her national debut at the '95 nationals, finishing 10th, and last season she earned a shot at the World Cup when the tour came to the USA. Result: a top-10, then her first top-5.
Comment: "The World Cup was definitely different ... I'd only done regionals - little contests, little mountains - so my first one [Boreal Ridge] was definitely a tester. I was putting my foot in the water, and I got so nervous; nothing productive happened but it was good practice. Now, I know what to expect. It's still a little intimidating but I'm getting used to it." Start-up: On skis at 18 months, she lurched into snowboarding at 16 when she and friends "decided to try it. It was something new and we liked it." Goal: "I just want to ride the best I can in a Grand Prix or World Cup. I can't control anyone else, so I want to do my best and see what happens." Family: Dad Fernando, an electrical engineer from Chile; Mom Esther, domestic engineer from Mexico; two older brothers and an older sister. "Dad skis, Mom doesn't like the cold." Other sports: High school diver and swimmer, and an "aggressive" fullback and wide-ranging halfback in soccer. And...: Also enjoys hiking, surfing, skateboarding About that name: "Griselda's German. My Mom found it in a name book and liked it." Music: Plays "recreational" piano, enjoys variety from punk to classic rock and "even James Taylor."
