Height: 5-7 Who knows what motivates an athlete? For some, it's a Vince Lombardi-style fire-and-brimstone pep talk. For Jeff Greenwood, maybe it's simply a good cup of cappuccino. Or maybe it's a chance to compete in Austria. Greenwood, who won two gold medals at the 1995 World University Games, opened a few eyes last winter in three races in Austria. He came out of the back of the pack to post an impressive sixth-place finish in Kaprun...won a World Cup giant slalom in Altenmarkt...and followed that by grabbing gold in GS at the World Championships in Lienz. This winter, Greenwood, who's added about 10 pounds, looks to defend his GS title and keep improving as he builds momentum for the '98 Olympics.
Comment: "I'm feeling pretty good with my riding. I want to start dominating it. I think with experience I'll be able to do that - that and ride more powder!" Start-up: A recreational skier until he was 12, Greenwood tried snowboarding when a friend brought a 'board to Vermont's Stratton Mountain during a family ski trip. "I'd always go up there skiing and then I snowboarded with him one day and that was the end of skiing." He rode well in Vermont's development-level Green Mountain Series but things really heated up when he enrolled in CVA, learning from then-Coaches Eric Webster (now at Killington) and Scott Palmer (now at Stratton Mountain). U.S. Coach Peter Foley invited Greenwood to a Summer '95 training camp and told him to think World Cup. "I guess he liked the way I rode. I told Peter I was going to start college [Western State] that fall and he said, 'No you're not. You're going to Europe." Cappuccino salesman: Before winning in Altenmarkt, he had cappuccino between runs. At Worlds, Greenwood - who raced No. 1 - was a little drowsy, so he had cappuccino before going up to start. Between runs, Greenwood, who stood second, .4 behind Mike Jacoby, went back for another cup...then nailed the bottom of the steep, icy second course to win. "Maybe it's a good-luck thing for me." Springtime break: Joined teammate Anton Pogue on a monthlong vacation in Mexico after last season. "We camped out and surfed for a month. It was great." Included: spearfishing when the ocean was flat. Water fun: Pond hockey, wakeboarding, waterskiing, spearfishing Dryland fun: Rock climbing, mountainbiking Family: Dad Ken (highway department foreman), Mom (self-employed), two older brothers...Dad, a high school ski racer growing up in Vermont, pledges to try snowboarding this winter ("Jeff bought me a board but he hasn't had time to give me a lesson...yet.")
