Height: 5-4 Burned out on alpine racing, Cammy Potter turned to snowboarding. Burned out on running gates, Cammy Potter turned to riding the 'pipe. She's a World Championships medal-winner. And a U.S. nationals medal-winner. And she's got her sights set on being in Nagano, Japan next season when snowboarding rides onto the Olympic stage for the first time. She made big progress a year ago and Potter looks to improve her consistency along with her results this season.
Comment: "Cammy hit it big at the Worlds last winter. It was good for her confidence and she worked hard all summer. That should payoff this season." - Coach Peter Foley. Start-up: Potter started skiing early and raced at Michigan's Caberfae Peaks (which Mom manages), south of Traverse City. When she was 13, she moved in with her uncle, Jim Clifford of the Park City Racing Team, and spend winters racing up against Shannon Nobis and Picabo Street, among others, before making the change to snowbarding while a student at Boston College in Christmas 1990. Quick hit: Snowboarding caught her quickly. She rode for two weeks over Christmas 1990 and was hooked. "I went back to Boston, sub-let my apartment and took a Greyhound back out here. I was racing two weeks later." Friendly rivalry: She was ski competition ("but not enough") for Shannon Nobis as a junior and Potter stayed in the Nobis household for two different winters. On the go: "I like to travel. I'm always planning for the next trip I'm taking." Tattoo: A few snowflakes are tattooed on the outside of her right ankle. Nail-pounder: She worked on three-time Olympic skier Heidi Voelker's home near Wolf Mountain on the outskirts of Park City, driving nails for the outside deck and an interior subfloor plus helping with painting. 1 Dalmation: Potter's seven-year-old dalmation, Spot, makes most trips in the USA with her. Family: Two younger brothers (one at Oxford, one at Michigan), Mom is executive director of the Cadillac (Mich.) Convention and Vistors Bureau; Dad's a tax attorney.
