Height: 5-3 Some day, Stacia Hookom wants to be an orthopedic surgeon but, for now, she'll settle with qualifying for the 1998 Olympic team and winning a few World Cup events. "I'll only be 21 [actually she'll be 22] during the first Olympics and 26 [correct] during the second, so I'll be doing this as long as I still like competing." This season, she'll be working her way into the schedule with an eye toward the World Championships in January. She tore the anterior cruciate ligament in a knee late last season (at Boreal Ridge) and was off snow until the late-fall training camp at Colorado's Keystone Resort. As the season neared, Coach Peter Foley reported she "seems to be coming along really well" and showed few signs of problems in rebounding. In '95, her best results came in giant slalom; last season, her best riding came in SL or parallel slalom.
Comment: "I find I'm all-around better at slalom. I have good days and bad days but this seems to be what I do best in and why I'm on the team ... In general, I'm scared of speed. If I'm going too fast, I tend to panic. I'm more of a technical rider." Start-up: She and a friend took a free snowboard lesson at Vail about seven years ago. An alpine skier in high school, Hookom skied and rode for a while before settling on snowboarding because of "better opportunities." Cross-training: Mountain biking, road riding and jogging helped with her ACL rehab. Other fun: Hiking, camping, making dress patterns, sewing, photography ("Not of snowboarding, though") and experimenting with poetry School: After her knee injury, she returned to classes. Originally, she'd put CU on hold because the intensity of her courses don't translate well to interruption (like, for training or competing). "I'd like to be a doctor. That's my goal - but I'm flexible. You never know what can happen." Best part of the World Cup: "I've seen so many places in the world at 21. It's exciting to be part of a team. Even though this isn't a team sport, it feels like it is because if one person from your team wins, you feel like you won, too." TV: "Days of Our Lives" generates mixed emotions. "It used to be halfway decent but now it's bad - but I just can't seem to pull myself away..." Pet: Cat, Indy
