Height:6-2 Ex-ski racer Tom Lyman's emergence on the international scene has helped strengthen the giant slalom ranks for Coach Peter Foley. Lyman moved off the "alternate" roster last season and rode his way into the World Championships and two trips to a World Cup podium...and a spot on this winter's Snowboard A Team. Unheralded at the start of the '96 season - which was, in actuality, only his second as a snowboard racer, Lyman caught everyone's attention right away. He finished third in the first two GS races (on a glacier above Kaprun, Austria) and stood seventh in the world by the end of the winter. He's been riding for only about five years but Lyman feels he's ready to start winning World Cups as he points toward the Olympics a year from now. It's hard to argue with his reasoning. After all, he competed in only the North American World Cup races during the '95 season and 17th was his best result.
Comment: "My goals this season are to win a World Cup and [to stay on-course to] make the Olympic team." Start-up: He grew up as a ski racer - Swiss great Pirmin Zurbriggen was an early hero - but was converted to snowboarding after watching good friend (and teammate) Steve Persons riding and competing at Big Mountain, their home hill, and elsewhere. "He started years before I did He was the first really good snowboarder I ever saw," according to Lyman. Coachquote: "Tom's got to work on his consistency but he's really fast in GS. He can't ever be counted out." - Peter Foley Cross-training: He finds the outdoors lifestyle in and around Whitefish highly conducive to staying in good shape during the offseason. "I take my outdoors stuff pretty seriously," he said. Activities: Kayaking, mountainbiking, hiking, windsurfing
