In addition to his five ascents, Viesturs has attempted Everest four other times. In 1987, he and Eric Simonson climbed to 28,700ft on the North Face, but failed to summit due to "insurmountable difficulties". In 1988, he attempted to solo the East Face but the avalanche danger was too extreme. He returned to the North Face in 1993 to mount a solo effort, reached 25,600ft, but again he aborted the climb because of avalanche danger. In 1995, Viesturs participated in a guided ascent with Rob Hall and reached 28,750ft.
