Ed Goes for His 12th and 13th of the 14-8000ers
Follow Ed Viesturs this spring as he and long-time climbing partner Veikka Gustafsson make an attempt to climb to the main summit of Shishapangma followed a month later by a climb to Nanga Parbat. During both of these climbs Ed and Veikka will be sending regular dispatches of their progress to us.(Click for dispatches)
At 8046m (26,400ft), Shishapangma, located in Tibet, is the fourteenth highest peak in the world. Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, at 8125m (26,657ft), is the ninth highest peak in the world.
In 1993 Ed soloed the North Ridge and reached the central summit of Shishapangma, at 26,397ft. The main summit is along an avalanche-prone corniced ridge. Ed and Veikka will attempt to reach the main summit on this trip. To see all of the 14-8000ers and Ed's success on them, go to the 8k climbs section.(Click for 8k climbs)
The primary goals for Ed and Veikka are to climb both peaks as a team of two, with the lightest equipment available, with minimal camps, without the use of supplemental oxygen, and without Sherpa support.
