Tara Takes Ten And Jon Pherson Flips Front For First Big Air Jan. 8, 1999
Jon Person stuck his double front so steady he rolled another one off the knoll in the landing strip. He must have known it was fruity enough for the win.
Tara Dakides stuck her inversion's steadier then Leslee Oloson's and "felt good tonight." Leslee was pushing herself as usual. Her final Rodeo 720 was either going to bring her the win or knock her out. Luckily she kept her composure and kept third behind Tina Dixon's sweet spins.
The snow fell and obscured the landing for many. Brent Myers fell to his face on his double back attempt. The crowd cheered as Brent was helped off the landing with a busted wing. Jason Borgstede reflected on Big Airs before the competition and how judging either looks for bigger hang time or spins. Jason couldn't find out what they were looking for and looked disappointed with his third place. His 900 was a thing of beauty all the same. Chad Otterstrom and Ricky Bauer kept up the pace adding rotations to their rodeos as the night grew. Ben Hinkley was off the goofballs for the new year and apparently it was effecting his equilibrium. He couldn't stick his double from flip for a fribble. He did lay out some of the most impressive swan dive late front flips that brought attention to riders and fans alike.
This was our introduction to Goat Boy who chain smoked and spit beer on you while he screamed lies in your ear. It began with a friendly neighborly question that snowballed into me becoming part of his slobbering ship of fools. I couldn't seem to shake him. Security didn't seem to bother him. I climbed the hill there he was. I pushed to the front of the crowd and he was there drooling in front of me. That's when I realized that he had one thing going for him...he couldn't feel the cold. Desperate to see this thing all the way through, I drank of his cup and was warmed, but I had exacted a huge cost. Now we were brothers and I became the sole focus of his blurred attention. Worst of all he had consumed everything and anything. I temporarily lost him between the podium and press room, but dinner caught me off guard. He found me next to the fire and immediately began stripping down complaining of the nice fire I was enjoying. He sat at the table, pulled off his socks, shirt and shoes and began hacking, hard across the table. He then calmed and ordered. I was so positive that they were going to escort his half naked butt out that I never considered that they would serve him. They did and I listened to him mock the piano player, sing and stink up the restaurant by drying his socks on the fan. I think I found a friend.
