Editor's Note: Tommy Heinrich was to report on his attempt on K2 this summer, but the tragic death of his companion in an accident has resulted in his attempting Broad Peak instead. Morale is Low Climbers Dispersing Wednesday, July 14, 1999 The morale at Base Camp is very low. Angelo, Oscar, and Manuel are going back home sometime soon. Jay Sieger intends to continue to climb K2 via the Abruzzi Ridge, as originally planned. Ugur Uluocak, from Turkey, will attempt an ascent of the mountain via the Cassin Route, at this time fixed up to Camp III by the Koreans, who are asking $1000 per person for the use of the ropes, which I personally cannot afford at this time. Hans Kammerlander, already acclimated, will leave today to attempt the summit via the Abruzzi Ridge if the weather and snow conditions are appropiate. If not, he will return home in a couple of days.
