Archibald Captures First World Cup Win In GS Sestriere, Italy
Sestriere, Italy - Jeff Archibald (Salt Lake City, UT) captured his first World Cup victory with his win in Sunday's GS event in Sestriere, Italy, moving him up to the first position in the season long GS World Cup standings. . Archibald's first run time of 56.30 put him in a tie with Nicolas Huet of France before pulling away with a blistering second run time of 55.80 to take sole possession of the top spot. Huet finished .05 seconds behind Archibald with a combined time of 1:52.15, while Richard Richardsson of Sweden was third at 1:52.33. Two other U.S. riders cracked the top-25, with Jeff Greenwood (Granby, CT) finishing 22nd (1:56.15) and Peter Thorndike (Meredith, NH) close behind in 23rd (1:56.38), while Anton Pogue (Hood River, OR) was 26th (1:57.59). For the women, Sondra Van Ert (Ketchum, ID) was again the top U.S. rider, finishing sixth (2:04.41). Italy's Margerita Parini won the event with a time of 2:01.15, while Karine Ruby of France finished second (2:01.93) and Isabelle Blanc of France was third (2:03.07). "This was a great finish for Jeff," said Head Coach Peter Foley. "He was tied for first with Nicolas Huet after the first run, but took the win in the second. Sondra had a good finish today as well."
