Mayumi Blasts Past
BOARDERCROSS:  March 19,1999

Mayumi Fakuda finished today's short course first only after Nillard Pilavakis spun out through the last berm. Mayumi took the inside line avoiding Nillard's cookies and pointed it to the finish with Nillard on her heels the whole way; wondering if she made that gate or not. Fabrizio Bonacina reeled in his best finish of the year against some hard booter crossovers who thought they saw easy money if they could overcome a few obstacles.

The likes of Mark Fawcett, Jasey Jay Anderson, Mark Schultz and the whole damn Palmer team. Shaun his-bad-self doesn't do The Open anymore. Must be too much attitude here for him.

The women's field wasn't missing anyone except maybe Maelle Ricker who injured her knee recently. The wonder from down under Marguerite Cossettini was standing tall against the very international competition throughout the finals and finally finishing fourth. Next tallest was all round ruler, rockstar, ripper, etc., Leslee Olson finding sixth painful. International rippers Tara Tiegen (CAN), Nici Pederzolli (AUT) and Bibian Mental (HOL) all finished top ten.

"Boardercross ruler Drew Neilson who came from Whistler just to race today was pissed off enough to skip this sorry excuse of a course..."

Leslee Olson..let's take a look. Leslee took 12th in the Super G on Friday afternoon. She hasn't been racing recently, but still looks daaaaaaamn good in her skin suit. Rrrrrrrrrrowwwwwwwwww. Later that night she pulled fourth in the Big Air with her big ol' powerful rodeos. Saturday she smoothly spun herself to 18th in the pipe and today qualified second in the boardercross. She was leading the final heat in today until she forgot to speed check the rollers. She flat landed and bounced off course. Keeping with Leslee's fiery competitive nature she stood up and finished the race. Then she collapsed under an injured knee.

Leslee is my hero and it was a painful way to end The Open for me. Along with that bad news was the fact that Boardercross ruler Drew Neilson who came from Whistler just to race today was pissed off enough to skip this sorry excuse of a course. Everyone confirmed his distress and Phillip Conte who pulled down the fastest qualifier opted out of the finals for the same reason. marguerite summed it up when she said "I'm just happy this thing is over".

Now we all bid Stratton farewell and head to points abroad to find freshies in this the beginning of spring. May all your days be deep and your night without sleep.
