Beth Coats to Undergo Rehab
Pro mountain bike racer suffered spinal injuries in climbing accident
Wednesday, April 15, 1998
Pro mountain bike racer Beth Coats, who suffered severe spinal injuries in a rock climbing accident in Colorado March 25, has been moved to a Denver hospital for rehabilitation.
Doctors at Colorado Community Hospital called Coats's March 28 surgery a "success," but on the wishes of her family, no further information has been released as to her condition.
Coats is expected to remain at Craig Hospital in Colorado for at least three months.
Climbing in El Dorado Canyon State Park, Coats fell 35 feet fracturing vertebras in her upper and lower back, fracturing her left shoulder and breaking her left arm. She was unconscious and not breathing when a friend reached her and was able to revive her.
Coats joined the Diamondback Racing team this year after riding as an independent last year. A two-time winter Olympic biathlete, in 1992 and 1994, Coats won last season's Norba opener at Snow Summit and finished third overall in the Norba National Series.
Coats rode in March's Sea Otter Classic and the Cactus Cup. World Cup racing began three days after her accident.
She began riding professionally in 1995.
