The headquarters visitor center is located on the
corner of Hamilton and Massachusetts streets at the end
of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.
Transportation:
To Park: Taxi or personal vehicle. Bus to
Stillwater, Minnesota from Twin Cities.
In Park: Canoe, powerboat, tour boat or automobile.
Operating Hours/Seasons
Landings and campsites are open year round. Headquarters Visitor Center is open year round.
Reservations/Permits/Fees
No admission fees.
Climate, Recommended Clothing
Summers are hot and humid with temperatures in the high 80's. Thunderstorms are common in the summer. Winters are severe, with heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Wear comfortable sportswear in season; wear layers of warm clothing in the winter.
Facilities and Opportunities
Visitor Center/Exhibits:
Visitor Centers with exhibits and audiovisual programs
are located in Stillwater, MN; St. Croix Falls, WI; Trego,
WI; and near Pine City, MN.
Programs/Activities:
Educational programs are available to schools in the
Riverway corridor. During the summer, programs are offered
to the public at adjacent parks and campgrounds. Other
programs are available upon request and include themes
dealing with ecosystems, wildlife, history and resource
managment.
Trails:
Seven NPS hiking trails border the two rivers. Two
are groomed for cross-country skiing in winter.
Camping Facilities:
Primitive camping throughout the riverway. There is
a one night limit at all campsites above Nevers Dam and
you must camp at designated sites. There is a seven day
limit at all sites below Nevers Dam to Stillwater, MN.
Most campsites are accessible by water-craft only.
Lodging is available in nearby communities including
Stillwater, Taylors Falls, St. Croix Falls, Pine City,
Grantsburg, Trego, Hayward and Cable.
Accessibility:
All the Vistor Centers in the Park are accessible.
Recommended Activities/Park Use
Canoeing, boating, camping, hiking, fishing, observing plants and wildlife, birdwatching, photography, cross country skiing, showshoeing, hunting.
Visitation
Highest from Memorial Day through Labor Day; lowest in January.
Visitor Impacts:
Information concerning high or low water levels is
available at each district visitor center. Trails are
for hiking and skiing only.
Adjacent Visitor Attractions
There are five Minnesota State Parks and two Wisconsin State Parks along the St. Croix River. Chequamegon National Forest is located near the upper Namekagon River, Crex Meadows, part of Governor Knowles State Forest near Grantsburg, WI, is an excellent area for birdwatching and wildlife viewing.
