Directions: The Hole-in-the-Wall Information Center is 42 miles (67 km) west of Needes, CA, and 100 miles (160 km) east of Barstow, CA from I-40. The Preserve is bounded by I-40 to the south and I-15 to the north with its western boundary 60 miles (97 km) east of Barstow. Access to the Preserve is possible from either interstate , but most notably Essex Road from I-40 and Kelbaker or Cima roads from I-15. The roads from I-40 to Hole-in-the-Wall Campground are paved. Routes from the north are not. The closest airport is in Ontario, CA, 80 miles (130km) away.
Reservations/Permits/Fees
No entrance fee. A California hunting license, available from the State Fish and Game Commission, is required. Collecting firewood is not permitted. Open fires are only permitted in established campgrounds.
Facilities and Opportunities
Accessibity: Most faciities are accessible. All sites at Hole-in-the-Wall Campground are accessible.
Camping & Lodging: There are two established campgrounds within the Preserve, Hole-in-the-Wall and Mid Hills. The sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis for a small fee. Each site has its own picnic table and grill. Bring firewood as no collection of burn materials is permitted. There are pit toilets at both campgrounds and a sanitary disposal station at Hole-in-the-Wall. Water supply is seasonal. There are no utility hookups.
Recommended Activities/Park Use
Hiking, camping (backcountry and established campgrounds), sightseeing, hunting (in season), 4-wheel drive off-road travel. Facilities include information centers (at Hole-in-the- Wall and along I-15 at Baker, CA), campgrounds, equestrian camp with corrals and interpretive programs. The Preserve never closes.
Additional Information
One gallon (4 l.) of water per person per day is the minimum requirement. Nights can get quite cold. Be aware that there are are privately owned lands within the Preserve and observe no trespassing signs. There is grazing in the Preserve. Be cautious of cattle in the road. Approach slowly and pass quietly. Authorized October 31, 1994.
