Heading Up to ABC and the North Col
Wednesday, April 22, 1998 — Base Camp, Rongbuk Glacier, Tibet

I head up today (at last) with Jim Findley for a two or three day trip to ABC, and then I hope we are able to put in a few days carrying things to the North Col (23,000') and perhaps even sleeping there. The first gang of climbers is coming down already.

Slowman and Richard were in on the start of ABC, with Alex and the Sherpas. Bob Parzick came down after a great acclimatization run. Alex and Panuru got down yesterday to care for their sore throats, Slowman and Richard should be coming down today after working their tails off above ABC. They found it necessary to fix rope along the already existing route to the North Col, performing a great public service, as it were, since too many climbers were clogging up on the Route set by the Chinese/Slovakian team.

Danuru, Pinjo, and Lhakpa Rita are hot for the Col today, looking to even get a tent or two up there. Heather is working on ABC today, getting things there organized and waiting patiently for me to get in gear and get up so we can work together above there. Our trek group should make it into ABC today achieving their 21,000' goals.

Alex and Craig will be in BC. Perhaps they will be able to send out a note or two, I'll show them the ropes and we'll see.
