The South Col Expedition
Follow along on MountainZone.com for the day-by-day action of the Alpine Ascents International Everest 2000 South Col Expeditions. Alpine Ascents guides will lead a party of climbers on an attempt to climb the South Col/Southeast Ridge route on Mount Everest. Climbing legend and Everest summiter Vern Tejas is expedition leader, and will climb with 69-year-old Al Hanna. Hanna already has climbed six of the Seven Summits, and has reached 28,000 feet on the Everest's South Col route. Guide Willi Prittie will lead other team members, Jack O'Donnell and Kevin Grant, and complete the Alpine Ascents effort on Everest for 2000.
Climbers arrive in Kathmandu on April 3 and expect to reach the
mountain by mid-April. Depending on conditions and weather, summit attempts
are tentatively scheduled for May 9-May 20. The climbers will make frequent
dispatches by satellite telephone, and send digital images and video
directly from the mountain.
