Hi Mountain Zone, it's Wally Berg calling you from a little bit before seven on Saturday morning. Market day in Namche. I'd like to tell you that I got up early this morning, which I did do, about an hour-an-a-half ago and then I watched Namche wake up, but no way on market day. Things are already happening down below. Market is an early event on Saturday morning. People come from many days trek away in most cases and even in some cases as far away as Tibet. They'll be some Tibetan traders down there — some brought yaks over the Nangpa La. Everybody sets up. Market starts really early because most of these folks are going to load up their goods that they brought in to sell and the stuff they purchased and they're going to start back out the trail. We'll be right with them. We're heading out towards Tibet ourselves, actually, out to the village of Thame. You've heard us talk about it a lot. Most of our climbing Sherpas are from Thame some of the very best and certainly some of the most accomplished climbing Sherpas come from out there. We're going to go out and spend a night: see some friends, probably go to the monastery — see if we can see the Thame Rinpoche or reincarnate Lama. And for me it is always really special just to get out there and kind of look up to the north and think about the...[Unintelligible]...which is over on the other side, those places that we won't be going of course, but just feeling close to the boarder and feeling part of that old trade route that is still going on. Should be a beautiful walk today, it's going to start in the hustle and bustle down below. I describe it down below because the Panorama Lodge is up high in the Amphitheater that is the setting for Namche. We look mostly down on to Namche. We'll be walking down into the hustle and bustle of the market, taking it in for a little while and then we'll be off for Thame and I'll give you some stories as we get out in that direction. — Wally Berg, Alpine Ascents Guide and MountainZone.com Correspondent |
