Making the most of an extra couple of days in Kathmandu prior to departing for Tibet, Hans, Kris and I took our lives into our hands, biking out to a fabulous old village called Bhaktapur. Irascible Maoist revolutionaries had organized a strike against the government, closing all the shops and cleansing the streets of the noxious black fumes that emanate from a myriad of trucks and buses.
The hour-pedal through empty streets was complete bliss,
disturbed only by occasional crowds of Maoist protesters hurling bricks at the Nepalese police and burning car tires in the streets all part of the jingle-jangle appeal of gritty, crazy Asia. We spent a lovely couple of hours touring ancient Bhaktapur and ran into our fearless leader Andrew, ever vigilant, standing guard at the entrance to King Rama XIV's palace.
The team positively buzzes with anticipation of heading for the Tibetan plateau tomorrow. Onward!
