Since 1992 Maik has participated in the Trans Swiss Triathlon, Adidas Adventure Race and the Liptonice Challenge as well as several other races. He has regularly competed in running and ski marathons since 1983 and has acquired several national titles in both Nordic Ski disciplines and biathlons. He has sailed long distances in Northern Europe and has trekked and mountain biked in the Alps, the Rocky Mountains and Alaska.
