The Race Disciplines a 197 mile course [The course terrain] [How do teams qualify?]
Lake KayakingKayak en Lagos
Teams will paddle sea kayaks (the polyethylene Amaruka plastic double kayak manufactured by Necky) the length of enormous "fjord-like" aquamarine lakes. Calm one day and white capped the next, these lakes can develop rough, open ocean conditions in a matter of hours with swells up to six feet. The water temperature is 6°C/43°F. This is Patagonia, unpredictable and wild.
MountaineeringMontañismoCompetitors will navigate with map and compass the harsh, but majestic, windswept terrain of the Andes Mountains utilizing crampons and ice axes on the glaciers. Dense forests will hinder progress in the lowlands as teams make their mountain approach. Teams will ascend to the
highest point on the course, a 12,000-foot, ice-capped mountain peak that offers a
breathtaking view. Total elevation gain is 26,240ft/8,000m with individual gains up to 8,200ft/2,500 meters in one push. The incline of the terrain ascended varies between 30 and 80 degrees of rock, ice and snow. |
There are several major glaciers to cross with inclines of five to 37 degrees. Terrain and weather conditions are common to those found in the French, Swiss and Italian Alps, the New Zealand Alps, Western Canada and North Western United States and Alaska. Neccesary skills include navigation, cold and wet weather preparedness, survival skills, ice axe self arrest, crampon use, avalanche safety and survival, glacier travel, crevasse rescue and fixed rope ascending, traversing and rappeling. |
Whitewater CanoeingRafting en Aguas Blancas Teams will use two-person inflatable canoes to negotiate a glacial-fed Class III river with natural obstacles of small waterfalls and Class IV rapids. While the water level is dependent on the winter snowpack, normal conditions make this a medium-sized river with a flow of about 50m 3/s (1300cfs). The water temperature is 6°-8°C. Teams must be proficient paddlers and familiar with swift water rescue techniques. Necessary skills include catching eddies, scouting rapids, recovery from a flip, recovery of a wrapped boat, ferry angle concept and knowledge of class IV boat maneuvering, self rescue, river swimming, river signaling and determining whether to run or portage depending on the river difficulty.
Fixed RopesCuerdas FijasAlong the mountain route, teams will use fixed ropes to overcome natural obstacles by rappelling sheer rock faces and large waterfalls and will ascend majestic granite spires, which tower over the mountain terrain that is the backbone of South America.
Rapel lengths can be up to 328ft/100m of rock, ice or snow with inclines varying between 45 and 120 degrees. There is at least one free overhanging rappel of 164 feet/50 meters. |
Horseback Riding Equitación Following the paths of the gauchos, competitors will ride across wide-open pampas on criollo horses, descendants of those brought to Argentina by the early Spanish explorers. This leg begins in the Andes mountains but gradually heads into a
mixture of desert and mountains, passing through cattle ranches, rocky stream beds and flat grasslands. Teams will be responsible for the care and welfare of the animals.
