His Life So Far
A smooth and very elegant racer on the World Cup slopes, Sweden's Fredrik Nyberg is also one of the few European athletes who's able to regularly challenge the Austrians on the demanding Super-G courses. That's why he is the first non-Austrian in the final Super-G standings at the end of the 2000 season - at the 7th place! He scored five top-10 places during the season in that event, reaching an career-best 2nd place in Lake Louise behind the "Herminator".

He also finished 7th in the GS standings and 24th in downhill, which brought him to 11th place in the Overall standings.

A 12-year-veteran on the World Cup tour who already competed at the 1989 Vail Ski World Championships, Nyberg excelled first in GS. He won five of them from 1990 to 1996 yet he never enjoyed the pleasure to clinch a medal. He came close to it in 1999, again at Vail, when he was 4th in the GS.

One of the greatest talents on the junior tour in the mid 1980's, Fredrik had a hard time to remain at the top afterwards because he didn't grow up as fast and as much as his rivals. With his 1,73 meters and his 75 kilos, Fredi is not as tall and powerful as most of his colleagues, but his excellent technique allows him to compensate this, especially on tough and icy courses. His 4th and 5th places in both Super-G's at St Anton only hundredths of a second far from the podium give him great confidence before the next medal events there.

Nyberg, who used to live in Val di Fass, Italy, with his wife Gaby during the winter-time, moved back to the north of Sweden. There he can better relax with his family - spending much time in the nature. Fishing on a nearby lake is the favorite leisure in the off-season of this very friendly and modest champion who looks forward for many more great years on the World Cup tour.
