His Life So Far
Kjetil Andre Aamodt reached another remarkable summit in his career during the '99-'00 season, proving again that he is the best all-around ski racer on the World Cup tour. With his slalom win at Wengen, Switzerland, and his triumph in the overall slalom standings, the Norwegian has already achieved more than he had dreamed. In the Swiss race, Kjetil became the only fourth skier in World Cup history to have won in all five alpine disciplines.

The other members of this exclusive club are Switzerland's Pirmin Zurbriggen, Marc Girardelli from Luxembourg and Gunther Mader from Austria.

Thanks to several other top-3 finishes in slalom, Aamodt clinched his fourth Crystal Globe at Bormio. In 1993, he captured the GS and super G globes and the Overall World Cup in 1994. He has won a total of 18 World Cup events since 1992.

After several early career successes in the combined event, Aamodt, from Oslo, had to wait three years to win another race. Last year he scored points in all but four races. Hoping to again clinch the overall title last year, aamodt was strong until the last week before the Finals, when Hermann Maier proved to be stronger, thus relegating Aaamodt to his fourth 2nd place overall finish since 1993.

Kjetil is one of only two skiers to have won medals in all five alpine events, winning gold in Super-G in 1992; in slalom and giant slalom in 1993; and, in combined in 1997 and 1999.

He was only 22 years old when he won the Overall World Cup title, and now, a veteran with a great sense of humor, Aamodt says his focus is on another title - in downhill, the only one missing, though he will also continue to shoot sor a second overall Crystal Globe.

Aamodt lives in Monte Carlo.
